Not All Care Companies Are Equal!
I arrived at the office yesterday at 7-45am and took a call from a customer stating they had contacted 111 regarding an emergency medical problem and the doctor had booked her into Urgent Care at Chorley Hospital immediately between 8am-and 8-30am. As a result she required immediate transport and support to get to the appointment. With no carers free due to the Easter School Holidays I locked the office and immediately went to the customer’s house to help.
At hospital the lady had to wait for the results of urine and blood tests, and then complete an x-ray. This resulted in a need for a prescription, and a further wait at the pharmacy for 30 minutes. This activity in total took 5 hours. To most people a visit of this nature would not be a problem, but to an older person with no car, poor mobility and no relatives available it was a major obstacle and a worry.
How many care companies would have responded positively and immediately? Most would have said they were “too busy” due to Easter staff shortages. Very few owners or managers of care companies would have covered this call themselves. However, here at Independent Living it is never forgotten that we provide a service and our job is to solve problems for our customers.
The following day I received a card and chocolates from the lady thanking me for my help. It was very kind but I did feel embarrassed because it is my job!
