Home care work is a highly rewarding job for those who enjoy helping older people.  However, care work is often portrayed in the media as being “low paid”, “low skilled” and not a positive career choice.  Those of us who work in care disagree with these statements.  As the National Living Wage has risen it has resulted in recent years in carers getting pay rises close to 10% and the new Government is considering how to raise the pay of carers as a priority.  Although people can start a career in care with no formal qualifications we promote taking care certificates and anyone who has carried out care knows just how skilled the role is.  To be a carer you need knowledge of issues such as hydration and nutrition and to deal with older people can require advanced inter-personal skills.  You can get promotions into roles like Care Coordinator or Care Manager.

Care is certainly a positive career choice.  To improve someone’s life and brighten a person’s day is one of the most rewarding things you can do.  To help people makes you feel better about yourself and is something money just can’t buy.  In meeting a range of people from all walks of life you learn so much.  A number of older people I looked after in the early days of my business gave me great business advice and moral support!  So you don’t just give support but you also get a lot back from caring!
